Why Your Carpet Smells Musty After Rain (and How to Fix It)

If your carpet only smells musty on humid or rainy days, that's a specific and fairly common signal — and it's usually not about how clean the carpet looks on the surface.

Carpet padding can hold onto trapped moisture from a previous cleaning that wasn't fully dried, a small unnoticed leak, or general humidity that gets absorbed and released as conditions change. That trapped moisture is what feeds the mildew smell, and humid days simply make it more noticeable.

Coastal humidity levels are genuinely higher here than in a lot of inland areas, which means carpet padding that isn't fully dried after a cleaning is more likely to develop this issue than in a drier climate.

If the padding already has trapped moisture, cleaning the surface again doesn't address it. The padding sometimes needs to be addressed directly, or in more severe cases, replaced, alongside a proper carpet clean.
