"Dry cleaning" for carpet is a genuinely different process than hot-water extraction (steam cleaning), and each has real advantages depending on the situation — despite what a lot of marketing implies about one being universally better.
Dry carpet cleaning uses minimal moisture — often a dry compound or very low-moisture foam — and is designed for extremely fast dry times, sometimes under an hour.
This uses hot water and pressure to flush soil out of the pile and padding, generally reaching deeper embedded dirt than a low-moisture method, at the cost of a longer dry time (typically a few hours with proper airflow).
For carpet with significant embedded soil, allergens, or older stains, hot-water extraction generally reaches deeper into the pile and padding than a dry method. This is why it's the industry-standard deep-clean approach and what we use for our general carpet cleaning and dedicated steam cleaning service.
If a carpet needs to be back in full use within an hour or two (a busy commercial space, for instance), a low-moisture approach can be the more practical choice even if it's a lighter clean.
